Abstract
This research project’s main goal is to study the transition from higher education to work using a social cognitive framework. This transition – seen as a temporally extended process embracing academic training, the job seeking activity after finishing graduation and the adjustment to work context – is influenced by a multiplicity of factors related both to the individual and to his/her environment. Thus, in order to better understand the transition to work, we assessed social context variables (gender, parents’ education level, parents’ occupational status, level and domain of training), psychological variables potentially influencing the transition’s success (perceived social support, career exploration, self efficacy, outcome expectations and goals) and several indicators of transition to work success (satisfaction with one’s academic and work path, grade point average at graduation, employment status, work satisfaction and income). Two longitudinal studies were carried out focusing on the academic and occupational path of senior students of Porto’s Instituto Politécnico (Technical School of Higher Education). Two separate assessment moments were carried out: a first stage (phase 1) on senior students attending their last school semester and a second stage (phase 2) that took place about one year later. The preliminary longitudinal study (phase 1, N=629, May/2005; phase 2, N=259, May/2006) allowed not only to study the transition to work, but also to carry out an initial validation of the instruments designed specifically for this research project: Transition-to-Work Self-Efficacy (TWSE), Job Search Activities Outcome Expectations (JSAOE), Occupational Commitment Goals (OCG), Career Exploration Process Outcomes (CEPO), Academic and Work Path Satisfaction (AWPS) and Work Satisfaction (WS). All these new measures presented satisfactory psychometric characteristics. Results both from the preliminary study and from the main study (phase 1, n=700, May/2006; phase 2, n=367, May/2007) showed that self-efficacy and goals positively influence one’s success in the transition-to-work process. These results contribute to the acknowledgement of the importance of social-cognitive variables in the construction of academic and work paths.
Resumé
Ce travail a comme principal but étudié la transition de l’enseignement supérieur pour le monde du travail dans une perspective sociocognitif. Cette transition - envisagé comme un processus temporellement élargi qui englobe la formation académique, la recherche d’une activité rémunérée après la conclusion di cours supérieur et l’adaptation au travail - est influencée par une multiplicité de facteurs associés tant à l’individu qu’á son contexte. Par conséquence, pour mieux comprendre la transition pour le travail, nous avons procédé à l’évaluation de variables sociocontextuelles (genre, niveaux académique des parents et leur statut professionnel, niveau de formation et area formative), de variables psychologique qui ont potentiellement influence sur la réussite de cette transition (soutien social, exploration vocationnelle, auto-efficacité, attentes de résultats et objectifs) et de plusieurs indicateurs de succès dans la transition pour le travail (satisfaction académique et professionnel, moyenne de la conclusion di cours supérieur, statut professionnel, satisfaction dans le travail et la rémunération). On a réalisé deux études longitudinales du parcours académique et professionnel de finalistes de l’Institut Supérieur Polytechnique de Porto avec deux différents moments d’évaluation : un premier moment auprès d’étudiants en dernière année de leurs cours supérieur et un deuxième moment après une année. L´étude longitudinal préliminaire (phase 1, n=629, Mai/2005 ; phase 2, n=259, Mai/2006) a possibilité, en même temps que étudier la transition, la validation initiale des nouveaux instruments construits: Auto-Efficacité relative à Transition vers le Travail, Attentes de Résultats relatives aux Activités de Recherche d’Emploi, Objectifs d’Investissement Professionnel, Résultats du Procès d’Exploration Vocationnel, Satisfaction avec de Parcours Académiques et Professionnel et Satisfaction dans le Travail, qui ont présenté des qualités psychométriques satisfaisantes. Les résultats de l’étude préliminaire et de l´étude principal (phase 1, n=700, Mai/2006 ; phase 2, n=367, Mai/2007) ont évident que l’auto-efficacité et les objectifs influencent d’une façon positif la réussite dans la transition pour le monde di travail. Ces résultats font appel à l’importance des variables sociocognitives dans la configuration des trajectoires académiques et professionnelles.
