In all the ancient systems of use of herbal medicine, total plant parts (leaf/ root/ stem etc.) or watery extracts were used.
But the contemporary research is performed only on solvent (methanol/ ethanol/ acetone etc.) extracted portion of dry part of the reported medicinal plants to identify active principle/s to synthesise it artificially for marketing it as medicine.
Do you think the present study system is complete?
Or it should include study on total plant parts and succulent plants having multiple components?

If it goes all Pharmaceutical, poor people ( the majority of the planet)! Will loose their medical insurance. However I'm with both systems in parallel with serious control not to privilege ultra mercantile practices.
well, it is not unique for each and every plant.
The active ingredient varies with species, type of plant and many more things.
By analysis we can now that which part of a plant is having maximum concentration of a effective molecule.
For example: for azadirachtin content ,max. concentration is in leaves of neem plant.
However, for turmeric, maximum cumin content is in underground rhizomes instead of leaves.
This means that part of plant shall be variable for different kind of therapies.
in isabgol, we use husk of seed and like that we have many examples.

A plant contain many such principles which may not be identified by the use of most modern technology due to their presence at very low level.
Those may have some effects when used with major phytochemicals!
I am not telling anything against the contemporary study, rather I want to add some more study on direct plant parts.
Following your example, I can say that the Neem (Azadirachta indica)
seed, leaf, root contain some common and some different phytochemicals, at different quantities at different season etc.
But the green, succulent leaves of this plant is in use from thousands of years ago in skin diseases!
We, the modern SCIENTISTS received concept of research from this observation and afterwards performed research on dry leaves to identify the active principles.
Why we are we not ready to evaluate the extract of succulent Neem leaves?
Just for the reason that it may not open any window of new business?

Our ancient fathers used herbs for healing all forms of illness. Modernity has changed this phenomenon. However, I believe the idea of studying total plant parts should be encourage to revive the use of herbal medicine.

My vote is for isolated principles only. I think that in the course of religious Taoism in China, the total herb process (aiming to achieve physical alchemy) was refuted.

Maintenance of bio diversity of such plants is a must to do thing for achieving above said points.
Many medicinal plants are now commercially cultivated ( as Safed Musli).
But there are some problems also. It is seen in many cases, there are some notable differences of many phyto-constituents among the wild and the cultivated plants.
( Such differences are also found in plants cultivated at different soils, among plant materials collected at different seasons, maturity level of plant etc.).
According to the developed researches concern with this issue i vote to the isolated of rich parts in active ingredient of any plants ,and so on for other medicinal materials in other plants.
When the question of herbal product of medicine come before me with the discussion & opinion of my young unmarried daughter Leena Parikh ,initially she has discuss with me regarding the importance of Tulsi , Neem , Honey , Adusi Pan, Turmeric & such other household items & after wards she came in contact with the Forever Living Product her observation regarding the medicine are fully taken care of an totally harmless for which she has studied for Eye Vision,Diabetes, Hair falling , Knee problem
