Is there such thing called world government? It sounds like conspirative theory..

Hi many thanks for the inputs and articles. Jairo Parada, you may refer to few articles on world government. It is an idea/theory debated. 

I do not think the concept of world Government is clear enough to go through theory and practical analysis. However, as far as I observe , feudalism was of local character whereas capitalism and socialism have global character. The systems with global character naturally are capable to develop any concept of world government clearer in days to come.

If we observe the world today with a lot of political fragmentation with different blocs, we are very far from a "world goverment" if we compare current times with those of the cold war. We have globalization in the economic sphere but political dispersion at a world governance level.

Dear Sharifah, I think that a self-evident connection between "world government" and capitalism is the global financial system. Especially in Europe, the recent debate about the economic crisis points out that national governments are forced to adopt measures in conformity with the stability of the global financial system, prior to the needs of inhabitants. An evident example is the letter of "recommendations" that the European Central Bank has sent to Italian Government in the 2011. It is understandable that some people have misgivings about the utilization of the concept of "world government" to describe the current state of world politics. Perhaps "governance" would be a more adequate term to denote the sometimes loose and overlapping network of international institutions which have impact on global affairs. It is a system very different from the concept of "government" used in the national context.

Naturally we can use "world government" not only as a descriptive but also as a prescriptive concept -- as a political proposal for the future. To explain what I mean please think of the Stanford definition (http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/world-government/): "‘World government’ refers to the idea of all humankind united under one common political authority." It goes on to state that "it has not existed so far in human history, yet proposals for a unified global political authority have existed since ancient times..."

Then the link with the idea of capitalism: It is usually claimed that some sort of world government ideas existed before the advent of capitalism (ancient Chinese, ancient Romans etc.) However capitalism is the first truly global economic system, and it is logical that those who think it needs to be regulated at that same global level see merits in a world government.  It is also logical that those liberals who fear the dangers of extending the problems of bureaucracy from national to global level reject it.

That leads us to an important underlying question: Global government (or governance) for what? What do we want to regulate, how and in whose interest? Your question about capitalism in the title may indicate the dominance of economic regulation but that would risk a neglect of political, social, cultural and security issues. It is also a recurrent question how to protect the poor and the weak under such a world government. If somebody creates it emulating the national systems (e.g. majority vote), there is an increased danger of marginalization for small and weak groups.

As a Constitutional Law Professor, teaching demands a constant reference to Sociology of Law, through Durkheim, Marx and Weber, basically, in order to keep students aware about the concept of legitimacy, by Luhmann. When Weber touches the idea the ethics behind capitalism, referring to the American Protestantism, he points out the danger of running after money and success neglecting humanistic values – the risk of the competition for fortune putting aside virtues concerning living together and respecting others. At this very point, considering that, being capitalism, until nowadays, the worldwide dominant economic system, a so-called world government must have in mind that the first criterion to succeed in both political-economic  and human development is to maximally harmonize the concepts, the logics and the language to give human rights effectiveness, independently from specific cultural differences. What a challenge!

The global governance of capitalism? ... Otherwise , global government is against capitalism and free market foundations.

As a conspiracy theory, the term New World Order or NWO refers to the emergence of a totalitarian world government. Economically the ideology of the New World Order presupposes a complete and mandatory establishment of the liberal capitalist market system all over the planet, with no regard to cultural and ethnic regions. All socio-economic systems carrying elements of "socialism," "social or national justice," "social protection" must be completely destroyed and turned into societies of "absolutely free market." All past flirtations of mondialism with "socialist" models are coming to a complete halt, and market liberalism is becoming the single economic dominant on the planet, ruled by the World Government.

Hi. Thank you for the information. It is a theory whereby some scholars and activists believe there is movement towards world government especially in neo-imperialism & neo-colonization discourse. It is invisible control/hands that dictate what and how states should/must behave in international politics in order to preserve the interest of the ''Government' (the hegemon').  

The terminology as well as the language, of the World Government, is a fiction that the CAPITALIST STATES AND ORGANIZATIONS are floating around to create a global opinion in favor of the global tyranny of capital. It is just the same thing as the invention of the  term 'self-interest guided invisible hand of the market'. The much-eulogized picture of the SELF-INTEREST was invented by the Colonial regimes; to tame and train the historical world, as per the colonizers' designs, a few centuries ago. The theorem of the invisible order of market, meticulously, made the society a subservient one to the economy, read as a capitalist economy. The present weapon of GLOBAL GOVERNANCE aims, more lethally, at annihilating the societies at the altar of the economies! 

By the way, who are the supposed, and the would be, rulers of that global governance? Unexceptionally, the WORLD BANK TRINITY- the IBRD, the IMF, the WTO and many of their ilk! All controlled by the financial capital, perhaps one of the most unreliable variables in the world of economics, based in Washington DC. 

The globalization, as evidenced, since the Washington Consensus till now, aims at nothing save the global subordination as well as exploitation of the poor by the 'PRIVILEGED RICH'! I can only wish that they do not grow to annihilate the world of people, to create a workshop of human-machines!

Is it possible to the world to converge only and only on the capitalist pathway? Is it desirable on account of it being a proposition which is socially IRRATIONAL, though neo-classically rational!
