Dear Colleagues,
I am trying to find references which confirm that the inactivated and mineral oil emulsion adjuvanted polio vaccines developed by Salk and administered in the mid-late 1950'ies were actually produced from poliovirus which were propagated in HeLa cells in order to get sufficient supplies of virus particles (due to shortage of monkeys).
I can easily find refences stating that the HeLa cells were important for the DEVELOPMENT of the vaccine, but I haven't found any papers actually confirming that the vaccine CONTAINED virus antigen propagated in HeLa cells. (and later the WI-38 cell line from the Wistar Institute)
