Prior researching in field of CFD and heat transfer , I should be EXCELLENT in the problem solving of problems in Heat Transfer books in the B.S.c stage ? does it make difference?
You need not be EXCELLENT in solving all the problems. Being AVERAGE is enough. But you must be EXCELLENT not only in problem solving in your research area but also concepts, approach,simulation and applications....
It depends on the research problem intensity, it is not possible to decide spontaneously to be excellent/average.
Please brief your problem so that one can suggest you to continue your research.

Low reynolds number effects on losses on turbine blades .
Dear A.H. losses may be of pressure and thermal related.
Thermal losses study require good knowledge of Convection heat transfer Mechanism.
analysis may be performed using any CFD Tool but it is not recommended to use the tool without knowing the subject knowledge of CFD.
Ansys CFX may be useful tool to you. just go through some exercise problems and try to visualize your problem on the same. analyze the result with experimental data.
