Yes, some researchers are possessive and don't allow others to enter in the field they are working.
However, they may loose in long run.
In majority of the cases in research, team work is required. Further, in interdisciplinary research we have to form a team having different specialization to effectively complete the research project.
Educational possessiveness is an age old phenomenon. I believe the emergence of patenting, copyright etc. are the outcome of the same i.e. why the work done by you should go to others' credit. On one front it is good as well as the real contributor gets the fruit of hard work.
Unfortunately, you are correct, especially those who are afraid of competition in the scientific field and who do not have the ability to work and production, thus creating a lot of problems that are difficult to deal with them.So it became necessary to register copyrights and patents.
Some researchers believe that educational possessiveness is right to him. But in my opinion, that your knowledge should be in the service of others. Because life is based on cooperation. Nor any one can the individual be isolated.
It is a fact. Some scientists are really possessive. In my opinion, it is not good for real research. Knowledge is the one which increases with giving it to others. We must also be obliged to acknowledge and credit the researchers who share their knowledge and findings unconditionally.
Dear Sudev and all, this phenomenon is happening right here in my unit. When I was new, I asked if I could be part of a particular group, but the reply was 'No'. So I worked hard on my own research interests, and even though I didn't have a research grant, I managed to do some good research that facilitated the learning of my students. It's RG friends who helped me to get some good papers. You can guess they are Ljubomir, Patrick, Raoof and several others. Now I have collaborators on RG. (The take-away lesson is 'all things work for good of those who love God and obey Him'.)
If you are scientist by heart then there is no scope possessiveness. Possessiveness only come when there is suspect ion in your research or ideology. People are possessive in accepting other results because of inferiority complex. One should carry out research in the benefits of human king irrespective of who has done the research.
Yes I have. When I asked to teach a certain course to an extension- out of town -class, I was told "that course is owned by a certain prof". The "owner" was a strange person, nothing to write home about.
Eventually I incorporated the information I wanted to teach into another course and by-passed the obstacle prof.
