Many tooth ache urgencies presents themselves to the general practice for pain treatment before the dentist fixes an appointment for causal treatment. We do also encounter some complaints resistent after dentist or stomatologic intervention. Nerve dysesthesia is amongst them, remaining under surveillance of the stomatologist. I use two unilateral points, one in the rear side of the auricle (auriculotherapy) homolaterally and St 45 (nail corner point) heterolaterally. Both points are treated with semipermanent needles (auricular needles), the ear point stays in (falls out by itself after a few days) and St45 is taken out after 20 minutes during consultation time. Unfortunately I do not have a statistical insight or follow up series.
Most studies of influence of acupuncture in dentistry are in the field of tooth pain. Dysesthesie of the inferior alveolar nerve would make a beautiful subject. Limitation is that it would be difficult to know if (enhancement of) nerve regeneration is due to acupuncture.
There is a difference between efficiency and efficacy. If a dentist injects an anaesthetic in loco, anaesthesia is 100%, it is very efficient. Manual or electro-acupuncture could not compete with this total efficiency, it would give more or less outspoken hypo-algesia. However, if tooth ache is chronic and invalidating (e.g. above 6/10 on VAS), resulting in perturbed night's rest or interferes with loss of social acitivities, even a reduction with 50% of the pain would give satisfaction (efficacy) without being effcient (not 100%). Of course definite treatment should be causal in relation to inflammation or dammage to the nerve (injection, extraction, implantation, fracture etc.).
I am quite sure many different formula's of acupuncture points could be suggested. I can give you some via the private channel of e-mailing? I have no photo's though, but a drawing or a power point.
In consultation with a dental surgery practice, we will look into the use of myofascial triggerpoints of the masticatory muscles. If we find clinical data would you be interested in joining for an article?
We are recently using acupuncture in our clinic also and get some good results. If you can sent me your acupuncture points ı Will be grateful. [email protected]
