It can be using RFID, weight, presence sensors or anything that can achieve the objective at a low cost.

Best wishes most suitable ID system is the passive RFID systems where the tag is a passive wireless device energized by the RFID reader. You can find many suppliers for them.

Free systems !! I'm not sure you can found some things. But for low cost RFIDs systems, may be printed RFIDs should be affordable for mass production.
