@Please try with 2% acetocarmine stain. Sometimes 1% stain is lighter and give no contrast. Warn the slide gently. Also check your fixation procedure. Pre-treatments of the material are important. Please take care of that part as well. What you have observed in the slide so far?

We use Haematoxylene as a primary stain after keeping 2-3 minutes with iron -alum solution for 3 mins so that stain will sustain for a relatively longer time.
Are you hydrolyze the root tip with HCl? HCl will affect the staining if it still stay in tissues or cells. So, at my experience, maybe you can get better staining result after wash the tips more times with distilled water.
