Has anyone ever applied MINTEQ program to model metal release from solid phases? How do I simulate solid phases in the program? Would you please tell me your experiences?
You can enter finite or infinite amounts of solid phases in Visual MINTEQ. The limitations will be on the types of solids available in the standard databases, which are mainly common salts. If you wish to model particular solids not in the database, then you will need to create new solid phases and enter the appropriate thermodynamic data.
One thing to keep in mind is that Visual MINTEQ is an equilibrium modeling program, so it will not give any kinetic information (how fast or slow leaching is) and it will not take into account mass transfer limitations (e.g. passivation of particle or depletion of near-surface layers).
You can also model desorption from metals sorbed onto solids; this requires additional modeling inputs.
In the attached paper you can see some modeling I did using Visual MINTEQ to predict precipitation of metals by pH adjustment (Figure 5).
