Pharmaceutical is too pure and expensive, but lower grades can be too low, with impurities such as sulphuric acid a problem.

Crude glycerol can also be co-digested with manure and other substrates to produce methane. In combination with manure it helps to balance the C/N ration and increases the biogas production.

Yes, it can be used in various processes as biofuel raw material. For example, if you use ABE fermentation product (Acetone-Butanol-ethanol) in the transesterifcation of the vegetable oils, the formed butyl(ethyl) esters can be blended with the acetals formed from the by-product glycerol and the by-product acetone from the ABE fermentation. Thee cyclic acetals (dioxolanes and dioxanes) improves the properties of the biodiesel formed, e.g. the freezing point, viscosity, etc.
