We are currently carrying out a study to establish climate change scenarios and are using the elegant R system. We have not yet used spatial packages and this is the next step. We request advice on the packages to consider for deriving spatial distributions from point data interpolations. Which are the best for spatial interpolations (sp, geoR & others)? Thanks in advance

Interpolation methods are available in ArcGIS and Golden Surfer (http://www.goldensoftware.com/products/surfer/surfer.shtml) - if you want to go for commercial. GRASS is an Open source software you may also try (http://skagit.meas.ncsu.edu/~helena/gmslab/viz/sinter.html). just those i have come across. Surfer is especially easy to use
If you are already using R, take a look at the GSTAT package. http://www.gstat.org/
From the website: "Gstat is an open source (GPL) computer code for multivariable geostatistical modelling, prediction and simulation, and has been around from 1997. In the original form, gstat is a stand-alone executable, interfaced to various GIS. As of 2003, the gstat functionaly is also available as an S extension, either as R package or S-Plus library. Current development mainly focuses on the S extension. The reason for this is obvious for those familiar with R and/or S-Plus."
