In several of the works we have done we have used Python as our scripting (programming) language with great satisfaction. It is a much simpler language to learn and while limited in some ways is able to let you accomplish so much with fewer lines of code, through it excellent package system allowing linking to many packages availed by the body of its users.

Ruby is said to be similar to Python but better than Python when it comes to Object Orientation. However, I am yet to see serious use of Ruby especially with regards to Geospatial Applications. In these applications, Python has been the predominant Language especially for plug-ins and extensions.

Is Ruby with its strengths contributing to these or is Ruby just an over hyped 'small' language?
