I have collected lake surface sediments using a grab sampler from an anoxic lake bottom. However, none of the commonly used geochemical anoxia proxies (e.g., Fe/Mn, V/Cr, U/Th) show clear anoxic signatures.

Could this be because:

  • The sediments became oxidised during handling, transport, or storage before laboratory analysis?
  • Geochemical proxies do not always reflect anoxic conditions, especially in cases where authigenic processes are absent and the sediment composition is dominated by detrital inputs?
  • If possible, could you kindly share relevant references or papers addressing these points?

    Thank you
