What is meant by online reaction monitoring by GCMS and LCMS to determine the formation of intermediate, and out of both which is more suitable in organic reactions?
Online GCMS is a technique that is connected with the reactor. During reaction a fixed amount of reaction mixture is transferred at definite intervels automatically to a GCMS connected with the reactor. The samples get analyzed. In this technique, time is saved compared to the conventional sampling and injection to a GC or GCMS. Thus will give those intermediates which are very difficult to observe in conventional GC analysis.
Rather that use LCMS you should probably use direct infusion on ESI-MS to study a reaction and find reaction mechanism. You can check this paper http://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/17/10/11507
Identification of the reaction product is one of the important step in dermining reaction mechanism. You can match the known product with unknown by peak to peak comparison during identification.
