Fusarium conidia with 3 cells is considered as microconidia or macroconidia?
I understand that Fusarium microconidia and macroconidia are produced in different ways. However, when observing those conidia on microscope slides, normally we observe conidia which are already detached from any spore forming structures.
I need to do measurement for both microconidia and macroconidia, so i need to know how to differentiate between microconidia and macroconidia. I had search about this but found differing opinions on this topic as some categorize Fusarium conidia with 3 cells as microconidia while other categorize it as macroconidia. So, which one is correct?
Any opinion is much appreciated. Thank you.
Wong Ling Chie Three different spores produced by Fusarium i.e microconidia; macroconidia; and chlamydospores. Macroconidia are hyaline, two- to several-celled, fusiform- to sickle-shaped, mostly with an elongated apical cell and pedicellate basal cell. Whereas, microconidia are 1- to 2-celled, hyaline, pyriform, fusiform to ovoid, straight or curved. So, more than 2 cells are usually Macroconidia.

Fusarium microconidia are 1-2 celled and mostly ovoid in shape. More than 2 celled conidia should be considered as macroconidia and its sickle shaped mostly.

Fusarium taxonomists often call those intermediate size (2-3-celled) conidia "mesoconidia". Though, only if micro- and macroconidia are also present.

Fusarium conidia with three cells or more were considered as macroconidia.
The Fusarium microconidia always with 1-2 cells and they are spindle or ovoid shaped. So the conidia which have more than two cells are considered as macroconidia.
Some Mycologists call the conidia with three cells: mesoconidia, espacially when they are straight and not sickle or falcate shaped.

Yes, dear Bikram Dhara, I agree with you, but some mycological taxonomists added another type of conidia in Fusarium called mesoconidia which represented by the three celled conidia.

Some Fusarium species produce abundant microconidia and rare macroconidia, while other species produce abundant macroconidia and rare microconidia, whereas some species produce both of them with large numbers.

For Fusarium spps 3 cells means 2 septa and i found 0-1 septum for microconidia and that means 0-2 cells maximum. I recommend the 3 cells with 2 septa is macroconidia
Fusarium spp. spores having more than 2 septa is macroconidia. For microconidia, we have only 0 - 1 septa.
