I tried to perform FTIR on an unknown object to try to find out what it is. It is a thin thread, which to me, looks like a metal thread. I scanned the sample many times and got lots of noise with two distinct peaks around the 2300-2400 cm-1.Is this corresponding to the CO2 from the ambient? Can I make a conclusion that the sample is a metal object based on the FTIR results I got?
The spectrum I attached in the main text was processed with baseline correct. Here are other spectra without any processing.
Hello Ji, thank you for your question. Your IR spectra seem to show only bands of CO2 and H2O from the ambient air or the sample surface. This means that your sample does not seem to have any bonds that are excited to vibrate in the measured wavelength range. Without further investigations, however, it would be unreliable to conclude that it must be a metal. A non-destructive analysis method would be X-ray fluorescence analysis or scanning electron microscopy. In this way you could even easily find out which metal it could be. I hope that my answer can help you with your question.
