Rob, good idea am all for it if you want to see in in desert soils. However there won't be much of freeze and thaw here in Kuwait. also if your interest in coastal soils/tidal zone.

I'm sure the desert soils experience some freezing at night, but the question would remain as to whether the others would. do you have any met data to explore this? Also, we'd need to think a bit about the quantity of P that we might be able to extract form the desert soils. Thanks for feedback, let's keep it going.

yep we have our met stations and the met data is also available from the national metrology department. I have never measured in terrestrial soil thou we have done several measurements in marine bottom sediments and water.

Hello Rob -- My students and I have been studying this process for several years. We're not using the same methodology as you, but we're asking similar questions. The soils were are studying are in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US, which experience between 70-80 freeze-thaw cycles per winter season. We are mainly interested in the delivery of soluble and bioavailable P from freeze-thaw processes acting on stream bank sediments, and the delivery of P to surface waters. One thing I noticed is for no-till residues on the surface that degrade release more P in surface water runoff than where they were tilled into the soil.

I am working and interested in P chemistry. I have studied P fractions and availability in different ecosystems and the effects of different treatments (i.e. moisture regimes and temperatures) on P behavior, and in addition the relationships between soil properties and P availability and fractions. I have not yet worked on Freeze-thaw impacts on soil phosphorus, but it is an interesting idea. The soils that I work with are highly calcareous and the ecosystem is mountain forest (Zagros Forest). I've done myself some total and sequential extractions of sediments colonized by different plants in order to compare the different P fractions with the extracellulars phosphatase enzymatic activities (neutral, acid and alkaline). I have some research sites in western Norway that could be of interest to you. Sublpine to low-alpine grasslands where I have been doing climate change experiments, focussing on plants, and where we have background soil data available. Vary in temperature and precipitation. climate loggers installed. There is some ongoing work on microbial comunities in the system - I wouls have to chk with 'my' microbial people if they are interested. Very interesting! I live near Lake Tahoe, a P limited ultra-oligotrophic montane lake. P entering the lake is a major concern for land managers in the area. The watershed is dominated by granitic and volcanic terrain. The west side of the lake has been glaciated and has thin soils, with the exception of meadows and low lying areas. The east side is unglaciated and dominated by deeply weathered grus. With an average of ~270 sunny days a year and freezing temperature possible every month of the year, the effects of FT are definitely important. Currently I do not have the support or facilities to participate in this study, although I would like to very much.

I could contribute soils from upland arctic tundra at Toolik Lake, AK, and from boreal forest at the Bonanza Creek LTER. I would like to have a better understanding of P availability in these sites, and especially the role that it might play in ongoing vegetation changes in response to climate warming. It would be neat to compare freeze-thaw processes in these arctic soils to those in other latitudes.

I work on topic close to your studies, in this case, the acquisition of phosphorus by legumes in symbiosis with rhizobia or interacting with PSB across a range of ecosystems in Algeria. What you propose is a real opportunity for us, except that we have a rudimentary equipment and we have to need a detailed protocol.

If you will be interested to get some samples from altitude 4000-6000 m.a.s, pH of soil 7-8 from nival and subnival zone we woul be glad to sample some for you.
