I would like to know how does an oxygen vacancy induce ferromagnetic behavior in materials. I would be glad if someone can point me towards a book chapter or a PDF describing the same.
First principle calculations in TiO2 show that the valence electron by oxygen vacancy occupy mainly the neighboring Ti:3d orbital which then becomes spin polarized due to inter-atomic exchange interaction, thereby giving rise to half-metallic ferromagnetism. The magnetization induced is roughly proportional to to the oxygen vacancy concentration. See Ref: Phys. Status Solidi RRL 3, No. 5, 148 – 150 (2009) / DOI 10.1002/pssr.200903078
