It is usually possible to screen libraries of drugs, siRNA, reporter vectors in the same cell line.
But if one wants to compare the transcriptional activation of the same reporter (or an endogenous gene) by a given inducer in a vast array of different cell lines (representing different tissues, conditions, etc) - what are the options?
Are there some special facilities for that?
Not that I know of. The problem is cell lines vary greatly in many aspects. The growth media is often different, the transfection efficiency, the ability to be transduced by retrovirus, the rate of growth, etc. Any high throughput automated system requires standardization for all these variables, otherwise the data cannot be compared. Thus, most automated systems are optimized for each cell line used. Trying to do this with many different lines in a single screen just seems impossible to me.
