We are using the EPA TCLP and SPLP methods of extraction on plastics to measure metal content. These two methods use fluids of pH 2.88 (5.7 mL glacial acetic acid) and 4.2 (DI water) respectively. We would like to get results for other pH values, namely 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, etc.
What would you suggest to use for the other extraction fluids?
Since you followed EPA method, any modification should be justified. I think EPA recommend low pH values because of high incidence of metal leaching and solubilization. Anyhow, I recommend addition of constant amount of Chemlating agent (EDTA) or very carefully KCN solution to all pHs selected. EDTA may assist extraction of metals (specially Heavy metals) from plastics. The selectivity and complex stability of EDTA is know to be varied depending on pH and type of metal.
