Is it worthwhile for governments to explore space? What are the benefits? What are the costs?
Some governments are spending huge amounts of money to explore space and I am just wondering if the money could be better spent on earthly needs. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Space exploration is costly and very expensive.
Currently new privately owned businesses are entering the game such as SpaceX...
Exploration has always been in the best interest of human nature to find new horizons...
Possible spin-offs are new technologies... And new scientific findings...

Exploration of space:
There are many things which we are trying to invent/design - the results of which most probably we will not be able to see - all of this we do for the future generations - for our kids ! And there is no more noble goal !
It is really way too expensive! Per say, I am really wondering whether its worth it or not!
Governments are perpetually involved in throwing money at projects no sane or frugal person would ever indulge in.
After all, look at Isabella and Columbus!
As with all government agencies NASA has become its own self promoting self perpetuating concern, begging for ever more money every year ... promising that by landing the next multi-billion dollar rocket on some god-forsaken rock someplace, we will discover life or the cure for cancer or some other miracle.
Thankfully private enterprise is now entering space in a big way and should overshadow government efforts in a few years.
But that won't mean government will stop spending money there.

The closest thing to eternal life here on earth is a government program. Once they are born, they never die.
