I'm conducting an intervention study and am in need of a brief instrument to measure English reading proficiency. Many studies employ standardized tests like the TOEFL and IELTS, but these are quite lengthy and may not be feasible given that our participants are also completing additional tests, including an English vocabulary assessment. I'm looking for a shorter alternative that still maintains a high standard of reliability and validity. Recommendations for such tests would be immensely helpful.

You can design a questionnaire that focuses on different aspect of reading comprehension including the target areas of your research...
You could use part of an IELTS or TOEFL test. It is not ideal, but it does give you a score based on what the participants can understand. Another alternative could be TOEIC, which is all multiple-choice questions, which is not great in my opinion, but it is faster, especially if you only give one part of each section.
