I submitted a manuscript in the first week of September, 2019 and as of today, my manuscript is still with the editor. I wrote to a polite email to the editor asking for its progress. Unintentionally, I sent the email on a Sunday. A couple of hours later I received an email from the Editor-in-chief, quoting - "The Editorial office is closed on weekends". Is it considered impolite of authors to send these enquiries?
This is just an auto-reply for Sunday. The Editor should respond in the following week days
It is not impolite at all. However, the review process sometimes get delayed due to the voluntary nature of the work. Even sometimes the delay is for finding a suitable reviewer who would agree to review your work. Hence, if you have sent an email on a Sunday, please wait for at least a week and then again write a polite remainder on a working day. Hope it helps.
