It seems that a good number of drugs are salts of succinic and fumaric acids.I am looking for references (I am guessing they are pretty old papers) as to WHY this is the case - pharmacokinetics, rationale, testing. Not so much papers on individual drugs, but overall, why these compounds are used.
I have a good idea as to why, but need published papers on this.
So far my search turned up nothing.

Salt selection occurs early in drug discovery and is a critical step for reaching a marketable product. It is an empirical step that is compound dependent and driven by the desired formulation and route of delivery.
