How can we calculate the drag force for a bluff body which is exposed to the airflow?

As far as I know, there are 2 ways to calculation drag force in CFD. The first one is based on the integral of shear stress; another way is by a control volume around the body and with the aid of averaged mass flow rate. Can anyone elaborate the latter method for me?
