I am interested in career guidance of students. Does your University offer this? How does it work? When can the students get career guidance at your institution?
This is a very important issue that unfortunately many universities including mine neglect. Career advice offered by specialists is unavailable now in the place where I teach. There is probably unofficial guidance of rather personal nature given by individuals to students who seek such guidance. The university seems to be more focused on training students, but hardly has anything to do with what happens to the students after graduation. With unemployment on the rise and the number of graduates spiking yearly, the situation is deplorable.
Jinan F. B. Al-Hajaj Thank you for your input. I have different experiences with this at the institutions I have worked at. I find there is both challenges with have a curriculum that is enough work oriented and also lack of career guidance to help the students do wise choices. Even choosing a work relevant master thesis can greatly help the students with their job opportunities.
High ranking universities are keen on helping their graduates to land on decent jobs after graduation, otherwise all training would be pointless. When I was a Ph.D researcher (Durham University, UK), many a colleague benefited greatly from career advice offered by the university though I didn’t need it myself. Such guidance does not only enable the graduates to make wise choices, but also to be realistic and pragmatic and hence they won’t waste time and effort on some wild goose chase jobs.
Yes, it offers different personal enrichment and professional development workshops based on the emotionalized learning experiences format. Also, interventions based on the career construction model of adaptation are being implemented.
Manisha Naithani Thank you for your input. In social sciences and the humanities the need for this is often underestimated. I think many medical schools are better at this.
Yes, in the university where I work - DA Tsenov Academy of Economics, a center has been established, which consults and offers opportunities for career development.
It is occur too low but sometimes the undergraduate students refer to me for resolve about lessons its problems. Of course, i am as busy as a bee and prefer to deal with own assigned duties.
My school has just starteda Center for career development. For start it organizes different workshops and offers data base creation for students who would like the school to offer them to companies lookinf for employees.
Hamid Reza Farhang It can be a challenge to be disturbed during classes with career guidance, bit it can also be an opportunity to connect the topic at hand to relevant work life situations.
Most universities (particularly, bigger than mid-sized ones) in the US have career services for students. Some universities have one centralized career services center for all students, while others have a career advising person/center in each college because career guidance should be customized depending on the field and major of students. A few have both systems and work collaboratively between the central center and college centers. Types of services provided by universities typically include psychoeducation, career fair, individual session, group session, mock interviews, and drop-in sessions.
Chtaini Abdelilah Isam Alkhalifawi It is a sensible way of giving all these smart students an idea of how they can use their education and make a living. Some students underestimate the potential of their own education and miss out on possibilities they never thought if. It also makes sense to show that your university is a quality intitution by showing that it has future employment as an ambition.
one of the main functions of my university is to offer guidance and support to all students of all majors and all academic years. I think it is a fundamental factor in any university in the world
There are bureaus in all university to advise graduates but none can offer the magic pill for employment when the job-market prospect is not encouraging and jobs are scarce!
Our University in Orlando, Florida has a career center where students can learn about internships/externships, improve their resumes or CV, and can be provided with assistance for job placements (internal and external to the university).
Ahmed T. Hussein Crystal Maraj Halyna Smolnykova Thank you for your input. I agree that career guidance is not a magic pill. The job-market is very difficult at the moment many places. At the same time I know the students discover new options and possibilities through career guidance.
Every institution should provide career guidance to students. Career guidance is the process of helping individuals (school/college students or professionals) in making adequate educational and occupational choices and in taking career decisions based on the demand and requirements of the future of work. https://idreamcareer.com/blog/importance-of-career-guidance/
Students need career guidance to explore and plan for future career endeavors based on their individual interests, skills and values. Participation in career guidance enhances linkage of academic and career experiences and thus, improves career preparation and management. https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1086214.pdf
Career guidance helps students to acquire the knowledge, information, skills, and experience necessary to identify career options, and narrow them down to make one career decision. This career decision then results in their social, financial and emotional well-being throughout. https://www.mindler.com/career-guidance-meaning-benefits-importance
Yes. it is there. I think it should be mandatory for the benefit of the students. Almost all universities or educational institutes have this facility nowadays.
Chinaza Godswill Awuchi Agnishwar Girigoswami Thank you for your input and the interesting links. I agree with you both and will study the text linked.
Yes, my university has a special career guidance unit under the purview of a qualified career guidance director. They conduct special awareness programmes to enhance and help students selecting their future career paths and also educate them on availability of different careers in future.
Yes I agree Kjartan Skogly Kversoy we too see some students find new possibilities through reflection, and door knocking on their own and also some getting settled in the organisations where they are being sent for industrial training as well.
In fact, In the science and technology parks of the great universities, There is a mechanisms that it leads to the technologically and innovative ideas discussed and ideas. Finally, after reviewing the ideas and determining the selected ideas, the selected cases are introduced into knowledge-based companies and after passing training and tentative courses, they could be entered the professional recruitment process. However, this process is prevalent in my country and I have a little information about other parts of the universe.
