Any suggestion or opinion on the statement that tinctorial strength (hidden strength) of the azo pigments depends upon the PH which is carried through the coupling reaction??
The coupling reaction that is used to make azo pigments may produce either an intensely coloured molecule with a conjugated (single/double/ single/ double bonded) structure, or a colourless molecule where the conjugated azo link is missing. The reaction is a pH dependent equilibrium whose product typically contains a mixture of both types molecule. In order to generate mixtures with high tinctorial strength it is necessary to use low pH (acidic) coupling reactions.
