Due to the current situation, most of you are teaching online. Despite the advantages that the online classes provide for students, there could be disadvantages that negatively affect the students' learnings.
It depends pon the cohesiveness of the cohort before the MCO and also the creativity of the teachers in developing teaching resources requiring students interaction.
Interaction should continue online as much as possible so students do not feel alienated which can affect their motivation in learning. Students also learn from their friends and classmates or peers so student - student interaction should be considered.
Missed interactin definitely does influence students' learning outcomes. Things tend to take longer online, which limits the total interaction time both on the teacher-student basis and in group sessions. This results in some students finding out too late that they have done too little working online on their own.
It is interesting to see the difference between my adult distance learning course sutdents and my students in regular classes. The students who have entered an online course intentinally tend to do much better utilizing the online interaction tools. Those who have ended up studying online due to the current situation still seem to expect that the learning "happens" in the classroom and their work at home is not that important; consequently, they don't achieve the results they would be expected to achieve under normal circumstances.
In my view, teacher-student interaction is an important 'ingredient' for an effective learning outcome because i) it is improvisatory, and ii) the outcome is often unpredictable. None of these advantages are part of the online teaching.
The impact I have seen is not necessary in the student's capability to learn / even though that has been impacted of course by the environment that they now study / but by the fact that the educator is not able to follow and adjust the teaching as well as it could when doing it face to face. This is especially true as educators had to shift so quickly to online courses they had little time to adjust their content in such a way to make it accessible to everyone.
There are systems that try to mimic this loss but they can't replicate the human touch.
We need to remember that teaching is not only about information, it is also about the way that information is presented to the student and if needed adjusted.
Hope this gets you closer to the answer you are looking.
PS. I do believe that online education is beneficial, especially for those in remote areas and that the current world situation has pushed all educators into at least considering integrating online in their normal teaching.
For existing cohorts the relationship with students helps us to tailor materials for the almost invisible needs that we spotted in face to face teaching.
For new cohorts the lack of relationship (and awareness of subtle needs) means that the materials are more generic, less personalised
As I am currently doing online classes due to covid 19 as I was attending class based session prior. I can say that online has no real benefit for myself I learned more in class was able to ask questions with initiate responses which help me to understand what I am learning better. With teachers having multiple classes they hardly get back to you and on top of that im writing a dissertation which for myself I would have needed face to face for due to my inexperience with writing a dissertation
I am Social Studies Head of Department in an international school. It depends on the eye of a leader who can watershed any situation for his/her benefits.Kindly, find my reflective essay on my experience in teaching during Covid -19 pandemic.
There are several limitations for online learning, and we do not know how the students see such approach of education. Also, social isolation and uncertainty are the causes of stress and a lack of focus. Therefore, there are several factors involved here, limitation of the technology, the students and teachers conditions, uncertainty, being a novice to such type of learning and other factors. We need to listen to students, and we need to research this area to understand what went wrong and how we can make things better if we continue to use online learning.
Dear Seyed Mahmoud Hosseinniakani , I think it is dificult for both (students and teachers) at the begining, representing a disadvantage for the students learning.
In the short term, I think it will. This applies to Jurisdictions where online classes are novel to them. This is because many of the students are still trying to come to terms with the workings of the online classes and that creates a gap between the usual time spent processing information received and asking questions for clarification. However, with time this will no longer be an issue.
Considering the specificity of the moment due to the covid-19. I believe that we are not actually carrying out an online education program, since the circus proposal was initially planned to happen face-to-face. We are currently making a transition to remote education, that is, adaptations from classroom to online, which has dictate implications of a course that is planned to be online. That said, it is possible that there is a problem with communication, as these students and teachers were not prepared for this other mode of communication and the interactions are different. That is why it is important to maintain links with students in order to try to fill the communication gaps and provide a better interaction that favors the teaching and learning process.
I am both a student and a teacher, I give advice on some topics, since the students are dissatisfied with the way the teachers give the class, why this disagreement? Because the teachers forget that in this environment they cannot much less extend the same hours of the face-to-face classes. So, in order not to lose that interaction with the students, they must go straight to the point, emphasize what the student really needs, the key points, and thus the student will have the necessary tools and will not lose the knowledge that they want to transmit.
In Educational Psychology, as many of the scholars knew it there are various types of learning theories. Among the theories, the Social-Cognitive theory of Albert Bandura (1977) learning theory mainly emphasized and plays a paramount importance in relation to learning by observation and imitation from the teacher perspective so as to be modeled by her/ his students in the actual teachers’ provisions of the lessons. In this connection, I hope in the online teaching main of the teachers activities seem not really visible /observable on how the actual teaching-learning processes going on. So as far as my knowledge goes this particular activity may be hampered from the reality of the teaching-learning processes.
As far as I am concerned, not exactly. I am able to interact with my students because of the technology adopted by my University. However, the flow of the interaction is not the same as face-to-face classroom interaction. Also, depending on the level of skill of the instructor, one could be get carried away and end up not engaging the learners enough.
Let me share my experience about engineering students. Normally they learn through online courses and even recommended Institute for the same. In such COVID situation, they are learning everything through online since two months. After three weeks only, they asked to decrease the amount of online lectures and agreed to wait for face to face lectures. Understanding concepts and becoming independent is not easier for each student and hence, the problems came to surface in such situation. I think there is need of in-depth analysis and experimentation for this kind of education. Though it has some advantages but unable to fulfill the basic requirements of satisfaction of a learner and even an educator.
On line learning is truly NOT shared learning. Shared learning is often at the beginning of new understanding of something and the invention of a new product or business. The give and take of student to student or student to teacher or teacher to teacher is the basis of new learning and the creation of new approaches to an aspect of life. Socrates said he learned more by speaking with people than he had ever learned in his own mind. I learned that from talking to a scholar of his work and not from my own mind inventing the possibility. .
Without quality interaction, observation and engagement in lesson delivery, learning cannot be said to have taken place. Due to differences in learning and cognitive styles, all the learners should be adequately engaged through quality interaction. For example, WhatsApp can be used t o support whatever IT package that is being used for instruction. Effective teaching starts with the teacher's ability to improvise. Technical and internet issues can hinder the flow at times but classroom interaction is not negotiable.
In order to increase interaction between learners, you can use different types of group-based learning such as collaborative learning, problem-based learning or project-based learning. You can also use the virtual classrooms if it is provided by the used online learning platform
Yes, the lack of face-to-face interaction does have an effect on student's learning. No matter how much you try to engage the students during online learning by providing various activities, the students still feel they miss out on something. For instance, during breakout groups, students don't actually know who they are working with because they don't see the faces of their classmates. It is only during oral presentation that they switch on their camera, but even then, that is only for a few minutes. Learning from each other through face-to-face interaction facilitates the absorption and retention of knowledge.
Let us not forget that discussion is not only an aid to remembering. It is also an aid to understanding because a student must attach new learning to what s/he has already learned to amplify or redirect its meaning. Without the give and take of discussion these operations in a mind may not occur.
I think there may be disadvantages because some students in K-12 school districts may not have access to computers. Also, some K-12 school districts are more advanced than others in what their teachers can offer students. Nonetheless, I believe these school districts are trying hard to make sure students are getting instruction especially in Language Arts and Math in K-8 schools.
Not everyone will be adversely "influenced". However the majority of students will have a difficult time adjusting to the new normal due to various reasons. there are some ongoing study which we hope will shed some light on the effects of online teaching (positive and negative).
Very interesting answers with different aspects for this complex topic.
I think that the focused students will learn even more that during a normal semester. Ne need no time for commuting to the university and they have less distractions compared to a normal semester.
Undoubtedly yes. Many of the students are habituated with the face to face learning practice and is natural, too. In online learning, students do not get opportunity to critically interact with teachers which they get while face to face. The environment/ learning context also influence the learning mood and pace. In face to face, the students are mentally and emotionally prepared for learning which is often not happened in online. The health issues are significantly affecting the students learning mood in online. Some face eye problem watching most of the time on screen and it is difficult to remain whole day online, this distracts students and learning is heavily affected.
