My work is on glasses. I want to know the melting point of the sample before synthesis, so that i can melt it to that temp in a furnace. So, can i mix the precursors (powders) in the required stoichiometric ratio and do DSC/TGA to know its melting point??
Do the M.P of the precursors will remain same as that of the sample produced from the same precursors?

you must be sure that any of the constituents in the mixture do not decompose during the melting of one of the component. Then, since it is a mixture show different type of behaviours. i) the other components in the mixture may dissolve in the melt of the other component ii) even this M.Pt. may not be the same as that of the pure constituent iii) a mixture of different constituents will not have sharp M.Pt. vi) if the components do not dissolve in the melt of the other then there will be more than one endothermic changes thereby there will be more than one melting points v) The temperature after the formation of the product will not have same melting point.

I agrree with Charles. Additionally during the melting process of a powder the contact of the sample and the crucible it change. The contact is than better and the heat capacity could be change. For your samples a step scan could be good to distinguish the reversible (Melting itself) from the irreversibel (volume change by loss of porosity).
If you use inorganic glasses the necessary temperature could be too high for a normal DSC (our DSCs has maximum of 600-750°C).
