As a major site of IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) production, I am wondering if liver itself is responsive to IGF-1 stimulation, and if so with what kind of sensitivity compared to other tissues? Thanks in advance. Reference would be appreciated.

Liver in normal conditions does not express insulin-like growth factor receptor. Some scientist argues that insulin receptor can serves as mediator of IGF's actions in the liver, but you would need to increase a lot IGF levels to do that (this likely can happen in vitro in cell cultures but it is not translated to in vivo conditions). However, I think that in some pathological conditions (not sure if I read this in pubmed) liver may express IGF-I receptor, but not sure if that was hepatocyte-specific.

Maximilian, I am sure that I have read in several reviews that liver lacks of IGF-R, but I did not track the references. We are not able to amplify it by qPCR in liver extracts. Butler AA, et al. Mol Cell Endocrinol 1994 101:321-330, indicates that "IGF-I receptor mRNA was detected in extrahepatic tissues only". It looks like that people do not report this negative result. However, liver expresses IGF-R in hepatocarcinomas among others pathological conditions. I hope that this helps. Good luck

Maximilian, as Jose said, normal liver, hepatocytes, does not express the IGF1R. It has been published that in damaged liver other liver cell types may try to help by up regulating this receptor but this is not entirely clear. Furthermore, IGF1R is associated to cancer progression in different cell types.
