If the capacities of cathodes reported in literature include binders and carbon conductors, why do we multiply the areal mass of cathode active material and not the total areal mass of cathode active material, binder, and carbon conductor?

binders and carbon conductors do not participate in the electrochemical reaction, so researchers usually report mass specific activity based only on the active components of the electrode.

Generally, the carbon conductors are using to increase the conductivity of the materials decreased by binders. Furthermore, as Professor Branimir N. Grgur said "binders and carbon conductors do not participate in the electrochemical reactions". But sometimes, the type of current collector can alter the overall performance.
If we design free-standing electrode materials, there will be no use of binders and carbon conductors. So we can get enhanced performance.

Binders are added inside the slurry to bind the working particles with each other and with the current collector as binder are usually non conductors so to compensate its non conductivity conductive carbons are added so these two nullify each other effects. as a results we measure the specific capacities by considering the active material weight only. But in some cases when reduced graphene oxide or carbon Nano tubes are added as conductive agents the capacities are measured by considering their weights also as they contribute to total capacities also.
