I think the academy has become a businesss in itself. Western/industrialised countries have not only seen the rise but also the deepening of commodification policies in tertiary institutions like universities. This explains the neoliberal turn most universities have taken, which has led to the restructuration of education itself and the weakening of labor rights (i.e., precariety, unbearable workloads, etc.).
