There are no contraindications to radiation therapy, radical, prostatectomy or hormone therapy for a man with a penile prosthesis. Also the patient with an inflatable penile prosthesis, both AMS and Coloplast can have an MRI, the devices are MRI compatible. The patient with a penile prosthesis can also have the Urolift procedure, the microwave procedure and cystoscopy and TURP. For the later a longer cystoscope is necessary in order to avoid injury to the tip of the penis where the flesh of the urethra is the thinnest. The only procedure which is contraindicated for a patient with a penile prosthesis is penile injection with Caverject, and Trimix.
I agree with Dr. Eid. Pelvic RT is not contraindicated in the presence of a penile prosthesis. There should be no increase in acute or late toxicity, alteration of prosthetic function or decrease in tumor control due to it's presence.
Do you know any paper about radiotherapy of prostate cancer in men with pervious penile prosthesis.. I couldn't find anyone. thank you for your answers
No, I don't know of any publications specifically addressing pelvic RT in patients with penile prosthesis. In my experience, however, there have been no problems in treating them in identical fashion to those without penile implants.
Agree with Dr. Green. We have had many penile implant patients diagnosed with primary or recurrent prostate cancer who underwent EBRT and or seed implants without any untoward side effects. This is so routine that we have never considered publishing it.
