previously I've crystallized a protein at 15mg/ml and have obtaind diamond shaped crystals. however, the second time i tried growing these crystals using the same protein with lower concentration (3 mg/ml) with the same cincentrations, the proteins precipitated. Why does that happen?
Because it crystallizes in different polymorphs with different solubility?

I have used various protein concentration to set grid once I get crystals to optimize best condition and diffraction pattern. You may give a try from 5-12mg/ml conc. There are various reasons for a single protein to precipitate at low or higher concentration.

You said you varied the protein concentration, but what about the precipitant you are adding in your new experiment. The protein:precipitant ratio is here to consider, not only protein concentration, to find any logical cause of the event you described.
