Does prolonged use of corticosteroids play a role in elevated risk of autoimmunity?

There is suspected association between birth control pills and risk of multiple sclerosis in women. Since prescription of corticosteroids is frequent and common due to inflammatory symptoms in modern-day patients, could there be an underlying link leading to the increasing incidence of autoimmune diseases, especially in the western developed world?
