Is the chemistry of alkaline compounds( Na and K compounds) at high temperature(more than 1500 degree Celsius) is different?
Is their PH changes ?
My basic knowledge of chemistry says that PH depends on the concentration of ions and at high temperature also the concentration of ions are same they do not change.
Whats your opinion on relationship of PH and Temperature?
The pH is a concept developed for aqueous solutions at low temperature. The generation of H+ or OH- ions depends closely on water in the liquid state. In fact, these ions are in equilibrium with water and this equilibrium is governed by the thermodynamic constant Kw:
H2O + H2O H3O+ + OH- (Kw at 20 °C is 1 x 10-14)
NaOH and KOH, two alkaline compounds, are strong bases that in solution change the pH drastically. At 1500 ºC they are in a gaseous state because their boiling points are below this temperature (
At 1500°C, NA and K are ionised (i.e. Na+, K+). These ions in gaseous state are very reactive species and are not stable and will react with other species very fast. There is no pH concern in these conditions. The reactions which take place are driven by thermo-cinetic mechanisms.
Nicolas Floros what about the water vapour present in the atmosphere will these ionised Na and K ions will not react with it?
Metallic vapors are formed in the shielding gas protection volume or very close to it. Water content is very low compared to the other concentrations. This factor might be considered in a thermo-cinetic model but I think it plays a second order role.
Alkaline elements will mostly react with silicon, fluorine, and transition elements at high oxidation state transition elements (Mn VII, Cr VI)
