I mean employing all kinds o blackmails against peers and using unconventional means(egs false accusations, threat to life, impunity, frauds, etc) to rise to top of your profession as some resort, does it really pay if I may ask? Would such an abnormal achiever enjoy the joy true success brings?
No, negative and destructive academic politics among peers never leads to true success in life. It simply satisfies ones for a shorter period only.

As a matter of fact, I have , in my 28 years of teaching I have observed this to be true negative and destructive academics politics to which those who are weak in the area they have forced themselves in to specialize resort to to clear their way to the top , though it satisfies them temporarily for a while in the end and in their hearts of hearts they agonize and of-tn end up frustrated fellows in life. May God save us from such fellows who can even kill to have their way.

Yes, such fraudulent schemers can never have inner peace and true satisfaction which , happiness which true learning and grounding do give. Hence no true success achieved and they can never amount to anything in the end only looking for other peoples down fall via gang ups with their likes to blackmail real people/achievers and even plot and sponsor plots to kill colleagues in the work place. If the LORD is GOD they will not succeed. Let them repent to have peace otherwise there will be no peace to the wicked of their lot, says the LORD, IJN, amen!
It may lead to temporary success but such success is fleeting. Only great scholars achieve enduring success though their contributions.
How can destructive and negative academic politics result in successes? Granted, it may pave way for some to enjoy undeserved favor, position or opportunity. Yet, these are temporarily and clad in tattered and inglorious cloth of shame! True academic success parades in the beautiful regalia of truthfulness, integrity and excellence.
Sometimes 'Yes' for the academic administrators' appointments, as usually appointment of V.Cs, President and Rectors of public funded universities involves lot of politicking but not for an academic and research per say....However as an academic we work in an environment of knowledge development we believe in the culture of " AGREED TO DISAGREE ". It is in terms of scholarship not being adopting a culture of goons and physical fighting as your narrative in the question.
Thank you Prof Khaliq Ahmad. Our culture supposed to be AGREED TO DISAGREE, however, it is not so among academics in my region, rather it is the otherwise.
As a matter of fact most of this negative attitude violate self concious and the person live to regret such action throughout his life.
You have asked a good question, but the response is not a simple "yes" or "no." There are many factors that contribute to or inhibit success to a professional that resorts to that type of action/behavior. The primary factors are the employment culture and the "Tone at the Top." These two factors drastically differ between private versus public employers. What is considered acceptible action/behavior while working for one employer may not be tolerated at another location. Moreover, every person has the freedom to choose whether to participate or not in the action. Based on observations, I've yet to see a person have long-term success using such methods or enjoy the success while he or she has it.
