Hi I am using UniprotKB to find the function of the CD Type I proteins. However as I see the GO molecular function for some of the proteins ( For e.g. CD 19 has one of the GO molecular function as phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase activity and it indicates the source as Reactome. I looked at other sources such is Pubmed to confirm if CD19 has enzymatic activity. But, I could not find any proof of its enzymatic activity. My question is: Does the GO molecular function represents if that protein itself has an enzymatic activity or does it assist other enzyme to run that activity?
The function section of the gene ontology (GO) describes the molecular function or the biological process. In the case of the cell surface receptor CD19, GO is referring to the biological process in which CD19 is a participant.

The GO annotation you can find in UniProt is coming from several sources, not only from UniProt curators. As mentioned before, if you look the definition of "GO:0046934 phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase activity" (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/QuickGO/GTerm?id=GO:0046934#term=info), you can read: "Catalysis of the reaction: 1-phosphatidyl-1D-myo-inositol 4,5-bisphosphate + ATP = a 1-phosphatidyl-1D-myo-inositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate + ADP + 2 H(+)." The catalysis of reaction is not only the active protein subunit but also interacting ones. If you want to make sure that a given protein has the activity, you can check in UniProtKB for the presence of Catalytic activity. In http://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/P15391 there is no EC number and no Catalytic activity. Observe also the Evidence code (http://www.geneontology.org/page/guide-go-evidence-codes). TAS means traceable author statement, which is not a very strong support. Do prefer real experimental codes (EXP, IDA, IMP, IPI, IGI and IEP) to prevent low quality annotations ;-) (eventually GO coming by similarity to a GO experimentally proven, ISS, ISO, ISA).
