How expired is it?  It's condition may depend on the lyophylization process and subsequent storage conditions.  Are you really asking if the collagen is broken down?    If so perhaps run a gel to see degradation.   Or you may wish to call the manufacturer for a degradation curve.   If its home made lyophilizate,  you can test to see if it works as a plate coating.
