Many established modern professional people forget to maintain ethical principles during their work now-a-days. Is it really hard to obey in daily life? I beg pardon if I have hurt anybody by this question.
In professional life, as in any other areas of our life, the role of ethics depends essentially on the degree to which certain values are part of the concept we have of ourselves. If I consider myself an honest person -that is, if the value of honesty is very important to the concept I have of myself--, then a dishonest act will make me feel bad. It will be less likely I will act dishonestly and, if I do it , I will probably try to compensate it when I get the chance. These are facts and processes analyzed by psychology.
The fact that these values are part of our personality or not depends on the education we received, our professional training and what society expects of us and of our profession.
Immoral or Machiavellian individuals often achieve their goals, but they also have to deal with the burden of the reputation they have earned .
Your apologetic expression, if your question offended any one, shows how politically correct you are, to be sympathetic and sensitive to others . However asking questions will never offend any body. Indeed to be ethical is a civilized behavior and modern societies should display higher standards of civility by being ethical in what we do and profession we perform so that we will be in the realm of modernity and hence modern society.
The contemporary society, not the modern society, some how looks disconnected from ethics and morality in every dimension, which the effects are displayed across the globe in the lives of people, societies and in dubious scientific activities and results there off.

Ethics is a valuable component in today's landscape, but it is surprising that even the top academician like NASTY DJ of CU (who is now in PU) has shed this component and behaves like a chameleon. It is a shame for our civilization.
The question is a good one. In the world of today, many persons consider ethics as a laughing stock or as the weapon of the weak. To such persons, acquiring powers through devious means or becoming distinguished professional will be thanks to a smart game that have been well played. Many professional persons spend their lives in accumulating wealth & gaining fame in relentless ways. Eventually, a wrong path will lead to the improper destination.
There is no better way than sticking to honesty when one is amateur & when one becomes professional. This straightforward attitude will be that of a "real" winner who never regrets or blames or disdains himself/herself.
Ethics have specific funtion and as a role wherever in the world, local value will be making different approach when someone colaborate to other people
