Basic vs applied research. Very evident application vs application that must first be sought and developed.

It better be either good basic or applied research.

Applied research usually has some application potential, however, this potential is sometimes not materialised for various reasons.

Basic (also blue sky, curiosity driven research) may have direct application potential, e.g. a discovery of a new cellular receptor involved in some pathology may lead to the discovery of cure.

Basic research can also generate lots of applicable results, which were not the primary target of the reasearch. E.g. the voayage to the Moon generated tons of technologies, directly applicable in industry.

But, to the contrary to the applied research, basic research may not generate neither direct nor indirect applications.

In my country, in my investigation, most of the research has not been applied or could not be applied. Most scholars just think to publish papers in international journals. Unfortunately, they argue that the implementation of research results is not their responsibility. Is this opinion correct?

Nazaruddin Sinaga Well, sort of yes. The responsibility for applying the research results in practice lies never solely with the researcher, there are others to do this, in particular the businesses and the governments.

The business owners may decide to use the basic research results (such as the hardened computer of the Apollo missions) and make a viable consumer or industrial product out of it.

The governments should consider the research results, such as global warming data, in construing their policies.

However, the researches may and should promote their results wherever and whenever they deem the results could contribute to the economy, or environment, or government policies, or human wellbeing, or education, you name it. This is the active role of researchers in the dissemination and utilisation of even the blue sky research.

The money for the research has been paid and it should be the utmost interest of all parties involved to make as much use of the results as possible.

Dear@ Nazaruddin Sinaga, I feel that there is always a value, but the value may or may not be significant enough to commercialise. Even in the case of science research like covid-19 vaccine research, I don't think that all research ( researchers) could make(commercialise) make money. Regards @Yoganandan.

This can be only a dream (desire). My personal results have been applied in industry and research by other scientists around the world. But, of course, this is not possible for all researchers. some studies may be negative, and that's okay.

On the other hand, some theoretical studies don't give applicable results. As an example, this is a few historical research etc. But in any case, all research changes our world and it is the law.

I believe theoretical researches are the foundation of practical researches. So, how come can we deny their values! Besides, there are basically two paradigms and ways of approaching research. If you go with the non-positivist paradigm, you are looking for the essence of why certain issues are happening. Then you may use this tacit knowledge as hypotheses in the positivist paradigm so as to generate applicative values. (just an opinion!)

Research related to applied sciences brings priceless implications and real-life applications that are helpful and useful to community.

I believe that every research initiative is a step forward in our path of acquiring knowledge and understanding , hence, it definitely has value , commercial or otherwise, not everything in this world can be bought or equated with monetary worth, human quest for knowledge and most of the finer things that make us human fall in this category.
