Hi Barbara,

      I have used Sigma GABA antibody to show GABAergic neurons and Alpha Diagnostic EAAC1 antibody for glutamatergic neurons. Both antibodies are raised from rabbit and they are pretty good. Even if the GABA antibody can show cell bodies, neuropiles and synapses, it is very good to show cell bodies of cortical interneurons. 

     You cannot use VGLUT antibodies for somatic staining because they should almost exclusively show glutamatergic terminals. GAD65/67 antibody we used mainly shows GABAergic terminals.

     I have to mention here that you need to add 0.125% glutaldehyde to 4% PFA to perfuse the animals and post-fix the brains with the same fixative, because the immunogen is a conjugate of GABA and glutaldehyde.

More or less the same experience than Guoxiang with these markers.

For glutamatergic staining i also used a EAAC1 antibody from Millipore (AB1520; 1:2000). This give you good somatic staining in the brain cortex

For GABA I used a GAD67 antibody also from Millipore (MAB5406). This marker stains terminals but in the brain cortex I could see also somatic staining.

I will suggest using mRNA in situ hybridization  if you want to identify cell bodies. Multiplex protocols will allow you to do multiple staining for co-localization
