I am trying to edit a UML diagram that was created in Visio 2010 or in an earlier version of Visio by using Microsoft Visio 2013. However, the legacy UML features are missing. Additionally, I receive the following message in the message bar and in the information pane: This UML Model Diagram was created with a feature that is not supported in this version of Visio. Editing of the diagram is limited and may result in the diagram not working in earlier versions of Visio.
Just because there is no answer, maybe this info will help - havent checked.

it states - "the diagram cannot be automatically upgraded to a new format in Visio 2013"
Also the changes in 2013 products (look at Visio section) there are some major changes that are not backward compatible

So just a guess but possibly the compitability pack - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39640 wont help - just for opening files.
From this info it seems that Visio 2013 is more lightweight editing tool and it is limited in backend solution if compared to previous version.
