A 3 month old male infant with grade 5 retinopathy of prematurity. Is there any hope for stem cell therapy? What about available specialized centers in this field?
Not yet, no surgery done till now as parents were advised not to do due to very poor outcome. What is your opinion regarding surgery? If it was unsuccessful will it add any more harm or any obstacle for any possible therapy in the future, like stem cell?
is the baby 3 months old from birth or three months corrected age? this would be about 5 months from birth. If the baby is really only 3 months old the detached retina might still be not too scarred. Where do they live? Is there any documentation of the disease (letters, photos)?
Unfortunately he is 3 months corrected age (5 months from birth). He is from Egypt, and today he is going for surgery. No available documents with me now, but soon I will have them.
Hope the surgery went well. Surgery or observation are the only options currently for Stage 5 ROP. Ehab El Rayes in Cairo probably has the most experience in your area. At ARC/Beaumont in the US, we're a busy international referral center for pediatric retina surgery, where many pediatric retina surgeons have trained (including Dr. El Rayes and Dr. Wong mentioned above). Always happy to consult electronically.
My coworkers and me treated many children with advanced ROP (stage 5) and made the following experience: 1. in cases with anatomical success of vitreoretinal surgery children did not benefit functionally, 2. primary anatomical success was not stable long-term. I my eyes surgical intervention is promising at stage 4 but not at stage 5. Stem cell therapy is by far beyond and reasonable clinical application in these cases.
My friend's nephew in India had ROP stage 5 and has lost his vision. He is age 13 now. We are trying to find a way where he can get his vision. We are seeing different publications online, but not sure how to proceed
1) This article http://www.omicsonline.org/stem-cell-therapy-for-retinopathy-of-prematurity-2161-0940.1000126.php?aid=21413 says it is is possible.
2) I saw this video https://vimeo.com/2962835 where they said they got the treatment. We are not sure if it is marketing or genuine.
3) We are only following the research happening in https://clinicaltrials.gov/.
We will be happy to send medical reports to anyone who can help us? We appreciate all your help.
