Does anyone have experience welding AA2024 Al alloy by using fiber laser welding method? What are the welding parameters? I want to weld 1.6 mm bare 2024 plate to the same plate.
I have some experience of the hybrid laser-arc and laser welding aluminium alloys. But I didn't weld aluminium alloy AA2024. The alloy is welded using contact spot welding usually.
Dear Deniz, I have experience with disk laser welding of mentioned aluminium alloy. Typical issues when welding aluminium and its alloys can be also encountered in welding 2024 alloy. Solidification and liquation cracking, evaporation of alloying elements,i.e. magnesium and also loss of strength in weld metal. Porosity is of great importance when welding this aluminium alloy. Evaporation of magnesium lead to the formation of unstable keyhole. It was proven by EDX that content of Mg was lower than in base metal. Microhardness drop was occurred in weld metal in comparison with base metal. But it can be increased with solution heat treatment and following artificial aging. But this, I did not tested. When I welded another hardenable Al alloy, 7075 there I observed microhardness increase after natural ageing.
Mikhail, I welded 2024-T3 aluminium alloy, but I have experience also with disk laser welding of other aluminium alloys. I have just mentioned AW 7075 from the point of view of natural aging. Cause i am planning to perform heat treatment of the welds of 2024 aluminium alloy and suppose that microhardness increase in the weld will occur after heat treatment
Deniz, I can calculate for you the welding speed at which the pore formation is minimal for known focusing conditions and thermal properties of the alloy . I need this information to calculate the appropriate welding speed. Thereafter, the beam power should be set such as to provide the desired depth of penetration for this speed welding.

The presence of evaporation does not prove that it is the cause of the cavity instability. There can be another reason - the capillary effects.
I have experience in high power multi mode fibre laser welding Ti6Al4V and AA 2024-T3. When you weld 2024 alloy, it is the best to use filler wire, otherwise you will find porosity issues and liquation cracking in the HAZ.
