I have access to raw surface and atmospheric variables from a set of already run simulations using WRF through NA-CORDEX. That simulation was run at 50 km resolution. I am seeking to downscale this simulation even further, as high as 4 km.
I think I would use this raw data (in netCDF format) as input/boundary condition into my domain (nested). This would be modified in my namelist.wps file, then run metgrid and geogrid executables, before running the real and wrf executables. Does that make some sense?
Maybe it is possible at the end, but it is certainly not an easy task. I am even not 100% sure if WRF will accept netcdf input files, I think that should be rather .grib format (which would require data conversion).
But the biggest "problem" certainly is that you are restricted to the CORDEX domain, which you have to use as mother domain for your downscaling runs. This may not be optimal.
Since the computations of the coarse resolutions are usually not too demanding in terms of computational resources, I suggest to start from scratch with your own setup.

You can pull with your data off, but I don't see there is a strict need to restrict yourself to CORDEX, as I agree with Patrick.
Looking for 4 km resolution, you don't need to depend on only CORDEX as you won't see its effect in the end. I suggest you look for other compatible input data for the WRF and go for higher resolution with multiple nesting.
