Does anyone had any experience or works in the field on the Vetiver zizanioides, some reports say this plant is better than phragmites australis. they reports that the Vetiver have more advantage than the phragmites in view of rhizome and form of straw layer. Did you had any research on this plant? Please documented your experience with data in the field.

Zabihollah, I have undertaken no research on either plant but there is much helpful web information on both. I have used Vetiver in Central America and Portugal and can point to several distinctions between the two plants. The UN (http://www.vetiver.org/NIG-soilcon.pdf) and http://www.vetiver.org/ among others have promoted this grass because of its remarkable array of features:
- Its occasional flowers produce no viable seed so it is not invasive; thus propagation is strictly vegetative. Phragmites australis, on the other hand, can be a major coloniser.
- Vetiver's root system extends down, not sideways and offshoots have no runners so it is compatible with intercropping.
- In the right conditions the plant can be exceptionally effective in filtering run-off and stabilising slopes even as steep as 45º, ultimately forming impressive contour line retaining walls a metre or more tall.
- It accepts a wide range of soils.
- For good measure, it can also remove pollutants including heavy metals from water and soil.
Vetiver is tropical, however, and while it can take light frost and tolerate some drought will grow very slowly in cooler climates. With water, which I understand Iran has ever less of, it may be suitable in the south. Good luck.
