We are starting to breed for a specific genotype and keeping up with breeding records and genotypes is a challenge. Would love to know what others have found to be most useful in keeping track of the breeding pairs and offspring!
in my opinion the best way is: 1) keeping the paper pedigree version of each your animal with mostly all information which you need. 2) preparing a database file for example in Excel or Access. This file you could use to calculating relationships between a breeding pairs. You could also supplement pedigree file with information about offspring.
we use a software that was developed by a physicist that was post-doc in our lab when we were at EMBL in Rome. He now sells the software and many animal facilities are using it now (including Stanford University). It is Java based, very flexible (different account types have different rights to operate on the cages and mice) and very complete. Probaly not too expensive, if you have only one colony, I suppose not many people are working on it, so you could get away with 1 server license and 1 client license, about 2150 $ excl VAT.
