I am looking for a mechanism of thermal decomposition of NMP and wondering whether free radical can be formed during the heating of NMP. Also, I heated graphite powder dissolved in NMP for 1 h at 170 C and after filtering the NMP changed its color from light yellow and transparent to dark orange like dark beer. Any ideas what happened?
Graphite may act as a dehydrogenating agent to give pirrole derivatives...

Dear Denis : As you know from spectroscopic analysis you can identify what is going on for you sample( i.e. data analysis UV , FT-IR, H-NMR, ...etc).
NMP, viewed from a different perspective, is a product of ring closure from an amino acid. NMP is not very stable and bond cleavage takes place under aqueous alkali condition at room temperature. The amio acid either polymerizes itself or forms a buffer in the presence of a strong base. Once the reaction equlibrates, the color stabilizes to light yellow. The secondary amine functional group is responsible for the color change. Hope this observatoin helps.
